Free-riding in BitTorrent Networks with the Large View Exploit

چکیده
This paper presents an experimental study on the behavior of BitTorrent networks when selfish peers attempt to maintain high download rates without uploading. We modified a BitTorrent client so that it acquires a larger than normal view of a BitTorrent swarm and connects to all peers in its view. At the same time, the modified client does not upload any data to its peers. Our experimental results show that: a) our modified free-rider client can achieve better download rates than a protocol compliant client in most common-case public torrents; and b) in ∼300-leecher PlanetLab-residing torrents that consist of 10% free-riders, free-riders on average outperform compliant clients, while they perform slightly worse than clients in a swarm with compliant clients only. Our results suggest that the large view exploit is effective and has the potential for wide adoption.

This proceeding deals with various attacks and exploitations P2P networks have to cope with. In the last few years BitTorrent became famous for spreading big amounts of data to many people in a short time. BitTorrent will therefore be the main focus of this work. This proceeding serves basically as overview about different types of attacks. It shows attacks that are able to prevent files from b...

eer-to-Peer(P2P) networks are powerful distributed solutions which do not rely on external servers and gather required resources from their users. Therefor fairness is an important feature for designers of these networks. To have a fair network we always want to prevent free-riding. One of the most important file-sharing protocols in P2P is Bittorrent. What separates Bittorrent from other P2P p...
متن کاملOn Analyzing Free-Riding Behavior in BitTorrent Communities
BitTorrent is undoubtedly the most popular P2P file sharing systems in existence that has been able to attract millions of users. BitTorrent depends on global components for file search, engages a moderator system to guarantee the data integrity of file, and uses an exchange mechanism for file sharing in order to discourage users from free-riding. We conduct one of the largest measurement and a...
متن کاملAnalyzing the performance and fairness of BitTorrent-like networks using a general fluid model
In this paper, a general fluid model is developed to study the performance and fairness of BitTorrent-like networks. The fluid model incorporates two important features previously isolated from system performance models, user settings with multiple groups and intergroup data exchange induced by the choking algorithm. Our numerical results point out some key parameters of performance, such as th...

Even though Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems present a cost-effective and scalable solution to content distribution, most entertainment, media and software, content providers continue to rely on expensive, centralized solutions such as Content Delivery Networks. One of the main reasons is that the current P2P systems cannot guarantee reasonable performance as they depend on the willingness of users t...
